Attention to movement in the context of development involves so much more than locomotion or “milestones”. Underneath what many of us would look towards when we think of development, are fundamental moving relationships that make these things possible and meaningful.

Our study and learning in this Touchstones series will focus on the movements of our earliest life—before birth and through very early infancy. We will explore the primary processes each one of us must utilize as living, moving entities to find our way with ourselves in our world.

These “touchstone” ATM’s have been selected because they point powerfully to an essential movement and function on which action and skill are built.

You will be asked to examine your understanding, assumptions, concepts, considerations that arise in relation to movement and development. As we look at these touchstone lessons, attention will continue to be directed toward the fundamental movement that underlies the emergence of motor control.

The Lamprey

This month’s touchstones will concentrate on the property of the Vertebral Central Core Movement we are calling LAMPREY because it  refers to the most primitive movement of this living relic. As you engage with these lessons you will find a side to side movement elaborated in many variations.

We will start by revisiting the first of the Fundamentals lessons, and then attend to three more variations. These additional lessons will be added over the next few days.
